About the lecturer:
Dr Rachel Menzies is a lecturer in Computing in the School of Science and Engineering and is the Director of Teaching for Undergraduate Computing courses. Her research interests lie in Human Computer Interaction and interaction design methods. Her research lab investigates how people use emerging technologies in different contexts, and how people can be involved in the design and development of these new technologies. In particular, she is interested in accessible computing, which supports individuals with a range of disabilities and situational impairments.
Dr Menzies is also engaged in computing pedagogical research, investigating different ways in which computing science can be taught, as well as key elements that contribute to student success, such as engagement, study methods and communication strategies. She has published papers in respected venues focusing on the inclusion of accessibility and usability within the curriculum.
Dr Menzies is the Education Director for the Scottish Informatics Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), which is a government funded consortium to further computing science within Scotland. This national role involves advising the Scottish Government on matters of CS education from pre-school to university level, supporting curriculum development across the Higher Education sector and leading on pedagogical research activities for Scotland.
